Which is why Chasing the Devil was so bad. It's like high school kids getting high and thinking they've uncovered some grand scheme and figured out "how the system works."
Welcome to real life folks. Things aren't so cut and dry, black and white, yes or no. There's a lot of gray areas and shit gets weird, but it's not some Illuminati type shit.
If you knew there was an influence out there that would lead to a growing prison population, don't be surprised when greedy rich fucks invest in that as a platform. Whether or not the music industry execs wanted to also make some money there and push that cause, I wouldn't be surprised at all. But let's not pretend it's some huge conspiracy. There's also things like new laws being signed or new regulations that can change large industries and people with lots of money try to stay ahead of the curve (like knowing Clinton was going to try and make a big push for a huge increase in police spending and three strikes law etc). This is what happens when uneducated (and sometimes educated) people use the internet and think it's an old fashioned newspaper. THERE ARE NO CHECKS AND EDITORIAL OVERSIGHT ON THE INTERNET! Can people just not learn this? Here's an anonymous person telling a story with no specific details about something from decades ago, IT MUST BE FACT! NOT TO MENTION, THE BIGGEST FAN BASE FOR RAP WAS/IS SUBURBAN WHITE TEENAGERS. You know, all the white privilege that stays out of jail even when caught doing bad shit. So how does that fit into this idea? So dumb, but also believable, which is why stuff like this spreads among those with no critical thinking skills (the vast majority of people unfortunately).
And look at the mental gymnastics to try and prove their point. African chains going out of style? Queen Latifah not making music? These are called trends, they last for a bit and then go away. Also, a lot of rappers got into acting to make way more money, or general audiences didn't care for political rapping as much as fun hip hop and gangster rap. This is not a conspiracy, this is just how fickle your audience is. PEOPLE liked NWA because the message and the sound, and it became extremely successful, so there were copycats. Also, If I remember correctly, Tupac was pretty damn popular for being politically minded (so they'll use his murder as a sign of stamping out free thought, and not the fact that he also did gangster music and ran in the streets talking mad shit).
This is all so dumb.
